Celebrating with Brulot Charentais

As with most of the best things in life, Brulot Charentais is an old idea. Discovered by the people of Cognac several centuries ago, the 'flaming'drink is suitable for all special and celebratory occasions. From dinner 'à deux'to a wedding, anniversary celebration or office party, Brulot Charentais is a truly memorable way to mark the occasion.

If your occasion calls for a larger number of cups to me prepared, why not organize a spectacular 'grande tasse'or large cup to produce a display your guests will not forget? This serves groups of 20 at least, and calls for 1 ½ litres of cold coffee, a 70cl bottle of our Brulot Cognac, and 40 sugar lumps! See our recipe for details.

We find the large cups are particularly suitable for weddings, anniversaries and other festive gatherings.

  • Pre-heat the large cup with very hot water
  • Put 1.5 litres of cold coffee into the warm cup
  • Pour 35 cl of Brulot Cognac (58% alcohol content) onto the coffee (pour over a spoon to float Cognac on top of coffee)
  • Pour 35 cl Brulot Cognac 58% alcohol content into the saucer
  • Light the sugar (it should catch light immediately)
  • Allow to burn for 3 to 4 minutes, then using a small spoon take some of the burning
  • Cognac in the saucer to the cup and light the Cognac on the surface of the coffee
  • Stir the contents of the cup and the saucer from time to time to keep the flame active.
  • The fire extinguishes naturally after 20 to 30 minutes (allow to cool down a few moments before holding the cup)
  • Place the cup to the side of the saucer and pour all the contents of the saucer into the cup
  • Your Brulot Charentais is ready! Stir well and serve warm!
